Well the English language has taken a long time to develop and many people have been part of its development. So they probably didn't mean the same thing that I'm trying to say.

Here is a really good article with some information on the word's development before the 12th century "Middle English, from Old English understandan, from under + standan to stand"

Looking at this though, it sounds more like the two words are referring to standing under something and being enlightened. Being a latin scholar would probably help a lot on this (which I'm not sadly).

Inspiration has primarily been from school and reflecting on the extremely large number of books I've consumed as of late. Which would be something like 8 books alone for the past two and a half months...
